Getting to Know Defensiveness

We all do it sometimes. We experience something that triggers a part of us to guard and defend. This defensiveness, while sometimes an appropriate, protective strategy, oftentimes creates a barrier between us and the people we most care about. It even creates a barrier between us and ourselves. When we fall into a defensive stance, we have blinders on that prevent us from seeing a full situation. With these blinders on, it is nearly impossible to respond appropriately to what the situation might call for. Together, we will take a unique perspective in understanding why we get so defensive, identify strategies to stop, and learn how we can show up with our loved ones when they, themselves, have blinders and are in a state of defense.

What happens at this event
Join us the last Friday of each month from 12-1pm EST to connect on a video call with other humans inspired to live more aligned with their values. These virtual community meet-ups are focused on dynamics and patterns that show up in relationships. You are welcome to attend individually or with your partner(s).
Please note that attendance varies. Some meet-ups may have 2 people in attendance while others may have 50. Anyone using speech that is unkind or disrespectful will be removed from the meeting.
Please keep in mind that we ask you to keep your video on during the call to foster the feeling of community through face-to-face connection.
This is not a counseling process group, but rather one of a series of information sessions about topics related to relationship intelligence and development.
Advice questions about what to do will not be answered — but we can talk through ideas together! This is a learning platform to facilitate your ability to make informed decisions for yourself and tap into your own inner wisdom — not to offer an external authority to tell you what to do.
This is a respectful community environment where judgment, harassment, and disrespect are not tolerated and abusers will be removed from community spaces immediately.
Each community meet-up includes:
- A brief meditation
- Psychoeducation provided by Kelsey, inspired by topics and questions from members of our Kalamazoo Therapy Group community
- A brief community discussion
This group might be for you if you are seeking:
- To live more aligned with your values and seeking a deeper level of emotional growth and development to support you in showing up in a wholesome way in your relationship with yourselves and others
- Inspirational psychoeducation to expand your relationship intelligence, rooted in clinical data, anecdotal data, sociological trends, existential psychology, and sometimes even philosophy
- Support and guidance as well as the wisdom of the collective community
About the facilitator
Kelsey Nimmo is a Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Sex Therapist, and Relationship Coach. She has spent over ten years supporting couples in fostering more emotional and physical intimacy in their relationships through a unique approach in prioritizing the wholeness of each individual within the partnership.
Kelsey believes that to create and maintain the depth of connection and fulfillment we each desire with another human we care deeply for, we must find a way to learn and integrate our own personal development. Through individual growth, health, and wholeness, we can only then show up in our fullness with compassion, love, generosity, and acceptance.
While we often think of relationships as having the goal of “connection,” Kelsey supports couples in learning to navigate and find resilience for the naturally occurring coming together and falling apart that every relationship will endure throughout its lifetime. Guiding couples to learn to hold and honor these times of transition (and times of disconnect) while not losing sight of individual needs and well-being (and not holding onto them too rigidly), she seeks to help couples step into a new sense of love and depth in their relationships that they may have never experienced before.
Kelsey offers individual counseling as well as relationship coaching, and facilitates groups and events related to grief, meditation, and relationship intelligence.
