Couples intensive packages make support for your relationship quickly accessible and faster-acting than the traditional weekly model of therapy or coaching. At this time, only Kelsey Nimmo, LMFT, LPC, CST is offering couples intensives.
Why Intensives?
Couples intensives utilize a personalized plan that allows you to skip the waitlist and get faster access to scheduling options reserved exclusively for intensives.
Compared to weekly coaching services or therapy sessions, the intensive format may decrease treatment time because of time NOT spent:
- Checking in at the beginning of each session
- Addressing current concerns that arise on a week to week basis so you can focus more on overall systems, patterns, and interpersonal dynamics that need attention
- Assisting you in regaining composure and emotional regulation at the end of each session
Intensives allow more space and time to reach deeper core emotions and values related to relationship patterns so that longer-term change can be achieved and sustained
The intensive model is designed to support your preferred schedule and timeline for your goals without sacrificing the integrity of the work.
An intensive might be right for you if . . .
- You’ve been meaning to get into weekly therapy, but your schedule is so hectic that the idea of weekly appointments feels more overwhelming than supportive.
- You’re interested in getting right down to the therapeutic work quickly, and you don’t want to spend months in the traditional weekly therapy model to start seeing results.
If you find yourself in any of the statements above, or even if you don’t, but you’re still curious about whether a couples intensive is right for you, contact us! You deserve to feel free from whatever is holding back the connection and intimacy between you. It’s about time.
Is this counseling or coaching?
Couples intensives at Kalamazoo Therapy Group are conducted by Kelsey Nimmo, a licensed mental health practitioner in the state of Michigan and a Certified Sex Therapist. However, intensives are coaching services rather than counseling services.
The primary difference between coaching and counseling is that counseling incorporates treatment for mental health diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, etc.
Coaching does not address mental health and is instead focused on interpersonal dynamics, fostering and understanding intimacy, and incorporating psychoeducation, resources, and accountability to support you in creating more connection in your relationship.
Intensive FAQs
If I already have a primary therapist, can I still do a couples intensive?
Yes! If you’re in regular individual therapy, adding couples counseling to the weekly schedule can feel a little overwhelming or daunting. You might even be seeing a couples therapist currently but you want to try something a little different. Or maybe your therapist has a very different style and approach than what you’ve heard about Kelsey and you want to find out what this is all about.
Whatever the situation may be, a relationship coaching intensive can be a great complement to the work you’re already doing. Your customized workbook will help you take what you learned in your intensive and continue the work with your therapists moving forward.
Do intensives address mental health concerns?
No. Couples intensives are relationship coaching services and do not address any mental health diagnoses or treatment. If you or your partner is experiencing these, it is important for Kelsey to know about them. However, addressing these concerns themselves will be left up to your own personal therapists. In some cases, present mental health diagnoses and symptoms may indicate that couples intensives are not appropriate for you at this time.
What if we start the process and Kelsey assesses that an intensive is not the right option for us at this time?
Sometimes it happens. Whether it is due to something that came up in the intake documents, screening assessments, or initial interview with Kelsey, there are times when a couple would like to try an intensive but, based on Kelsey’s assessment, it is not the best course of action at this time.
Kelsey has the right to refuse an intensive for any couple at any time based on her assessment of status and needs of the individuals as well as the relationship itself.
Intensives can’t do magic and aren’t the best fit for every couple. If Kelsey believes an intensive could be potentially harmful to you as individuals or that you would benefit from a more traditional therapy model first, she will be honest about this recommendation as early as possible to save you time and money.
If I’m already a weekly client working with Kelsey, can I participate in a couples intensive?
Yes! Couples intensives for current clients are available in modified formats and pricing based on the nature of your ongoing work. They can be a terrific opportunity to take a deeper dive as a complement to your current process.
If you’re a current client interested in doing an intensive program in conjunction with your weekly therapy/coaching sessions, or even a current client who is interested in switching to an entirely intensive-based program, we can tailor a program for you.
Can I do a couples intensive virtually?
Yes! Intensives can be conducted via a HIPAA confidential video platform if you are not local to Kalamazoo.
As intensives are coaching instead of counseling, services are not limited to the state of Michigan.
Can I use my insurance to pay for intensives?
No. Insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples intensives due to these being coaching services instead of counseling.
Even if the approach would be counseling instead of coaching, the constraints placed on duration and frequency of sessions by insurance companies would prevent coverage for these services.
When we are not operating from a mindset that is limited by what insurance will cover, we are able to design a program that is focused solely on your timeline and goals.
A couples intensive is a significant investment in the well-being of your relationship and both of you as individuals.
If I already did an intensive with Kelsey, can I do another one?
Yes! Many couples find that intensives work well for their schedules and, although expensive, are more affordable than missing work on a weekly basis in the traditional therapy/coaching model. As each intensive package is customized to your relationship and individual needs, you can certainly choose to do more than one.
