Carrie Howland Yellin is a Limited Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist at Kalamazoo Therapy Group.
Taking a solution-focused therapeutic approach with her clients, Carrie incorporates positive, forward-thinking methodologies in session, focusing on attainable goals and drawing from her clients’ own strengths and resources. Carrie believes that her clients are the experts in their own lives and sees her role as a counselor as that of an advocate, support, and ally. Her approach is collaborative, encouraging clients to take an active role in their counseling experience.
Carrie is passionate about her work with couples and families, as well as individuals. Regarding couples, Carrie is a proponent of counseling prior to marriage or other major life decisions, such as cohabitation or pregnancy. In short: couples therapy isn’t just for married couples! For families, Carrie believes in a family systems approach, which views the family as an emotional unit and sees each individual member as connected to, and influenced by, every other member of the family. Carrie is also a strong advocate for Sex Therapy and is interested in working with both couples and individuals in this important area of counseling.
Of particular interest for Carrie is working with individuals, couples, and families who are navigating fertility concerns, pregnancy, traumatic birth experiences, maternal mental health, and early parenthood. As a mother to a toddler, Carrie truly enjoys working with young children, especially in times of transition (starting school, potty training, welcoming a new sibling, divorce, etc.). Carrie takes a positive approach to discipline, a word taken from the Latin disciplina, meaning to “instruct or train,” and the root word discere, which means “to learn.” She believes that with children, we must first connect, then redirect, and advocates for the importance of secure attachment for children and their parents or caregivers.
Carrie also considers herself a strong LGBTQ+ ally, with a desire to work as both a therapeutic support and advocate for individuals, couples, and families in this community. Carrie is especially enthusiastic about working with couples wherein one or both partners are undergoing gender affirming transitions, and with parents of children who are experiencing gender affirming transitions. She is also passionate about providing support for clients with concerns surrounding sexuality, coming out, relationships, and family support. Carrie seeks to provide a safe, affirming space where all individuals, couples, and family members can talk openly about gender, identity, and sexuality.
