ADHD Treatment

Therapy can be an extremely effective way to support your management of ADHD symptoms that adversely affect daily life while still honoring the benefits and unique gifts that come from living with ADHD.

Therapeutic treatment for ADHD at Kalamazoo Therapy Group is provided by clinicians trained and experienced in working with ADHD. While many psychotherapy approaches can be supportive supplements to treatment, our therapists are informed and practiced in engaging with ADHD through a combination of CBT, behavioral therapy, and strengths-based approach, encouraging both accountability as well as an important shift in personal narrative to set you up for success in managing your symptoms and improving your daily life functioning.

Kalamazoo Therapy Group is proud to support our community by providing comprehensive ADHD evaluations for children and adults, ages 6 and up. We believe in providing quality psychoeducation along with our testing and are happy to offer ADHD testing and treatment options that include collaboration with educators and parents.

What is ADHD testing?

While many individuals don’t feel the need to identify a specific diagnosis for their ADHD, others might find the benefits of professional evaluation and diagnosis important to access additional academic resources and medication to enhance daily functionality.

While there is no single medical, physical, or genetic test for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a diagnostic evaluation can be provided by a qualified mental health care professional who gathers information from multiple sources, including:

• standardized ADHD assessments
• a detailed history of past and current functioning procured during an interview process
• information obtained from family members or significant others who know the person best

ADHD diagnosis is based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) and differentiates between 3 different presentations of ADHD — Predominantly Inattentive, Hyperactive-Impulsive, and Combined.

In conjunction with the intake and assessments, a diagnosis of ADHD is determined by the clinician, based on:

• number and severity of symptoms
• duration of symptoms
• degree to which these symptoms cause impairment in various areas of life, such as home, school or work; with friends or family; etc.

Why would I need to be tested for ADHD?

Most people that seek an evaluation for ADHD experience significant problems in multiple areas of life. The following are some of the most common inconveniences:

Children/adolescents:

• Short attention span and easily distracted
• Making careless mistakes, like with schoolwork and homework
• Appearing forgetful or misplacing things
• Difficulty following through with assigned tasks
• Appearing unable to listen or carry out instructions; difficulty concentrating
• Difficulty organizing tasks
• Unable to sit still, constant fidgeting
• Excessive talking; interrupting conversations
• Difficulty waiting their turn; acting without thinking
• Little or no sense of danger

Adults:

• Inconsistent performance in jobs or careers; no history of long-term employment
• History of academic and/or career underachievement
• Difficulty managing daily responsibilities, household chores, and important tasks; lack organizational skills
• History of forgetting important things
• Often experiencing feelings of stress and worry due to a failure to accomplish goals and meet responsibilities on time

How much does testing for ADHD cost?

We offer two options for ADHD testing at Kalamazoo Therapy Group.

Generalized ADHD Evaluation (Available for adults only, 18+) – $840

Assesses for inattention, hyperactivity, DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, and overall ADHD score. Includes an initial oral evaluation/interview, written evaluation, and a report of results for your records.

Is likely sufficient for discussing medication options with your primary care physician.

Comprehensive ADHD Evaluation (Available for ages 6+) – $970

Assesses for inattention, hyperactivity, global index, family, aggression, conduct, DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, and overall ADHD score.

Includes an initial oral evaluation/interview, written evaluation, a report of results for your records, and one follow-up meeting to discuss your results and explore suggested treatment options.

Is sufficient for discussing medication options with your primary care physician, exploring behavioral/lifestyle changes, and qualifying for additional resources through the school systems.

Collaboration with your child’s teacher is available upon request to improve learning outcomes and support resources.
